Watchdog Calls on Members
of Congress to Come Clean on Contributors Involved in Looming
Prostitution Scandal
Senator Larry Craig, Reps. Jerry Lewis, Duncan Hunter, and John
Doolittle all had close ties to contractors who obtained prostitutes
for Cunningham; all were among top recipients of campaign contributions
The Wall Street Journal reported this morning
that the federal investigation into the Duke Cunningham bribery
scandal has expanded to encompass whether defense contractors
Mitch Wade and Brent Wilkes provided prostitutes for Cunningham
as part of their scheme. Campaign watchdog TheRestofUs.org called
on all members of Congress with ties to defense contractors
Wade and Wilkes to state categorically whether that relationship
included the procurement in any form of sexual partners.
“We call on all those elected officials with ties
to Brent Wilkes and Mitch Wade to come clean about whether Wade
and Wilkes procured in any fashion sexual partners on their
behalf,” said Ned Wigglesworth, researcher and analyst for TheRestofUs.org.
“Particularly those members among the top recipients of campaign
contributions from these men have a duty to tell their constituents,
and indeed the country, that neither their representation nor
our national security was compromised by the members’ sexual
behavior.”
The watchdog released a list of the top ten recipients
of campaign contributions from Wilkes and his associates, which
included Representatives Duke Cunningham, Duncan Hunter, Jerry
Lewis, and John Doolittle, Idaho Senator Larry Craig, and California
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“The public has a right to hear it from their
elected official that they weren’t involved in this sordid scheme,”
said Derek Cressman, director of TheRestofUs.org.
